My name is Andrew, I am 28 years old and I have been supported by Community Living Options since I was 18 years old, I really like CLO.
I’m a very happy person, a very positive person (most of the time anyways!). I’m a gentle giant, just a lovely person to be around, all that kind of stuff. I love my support workers, I love being with CLO, they’ve been good to me.
My life has changed a lot since being supported by CLO, I’ve got a lot more freedom and I’m not so angry anymore – when I was first with CLO I was a very angry, bitter person. I’m not like that anymore, I’ve changed a lot, I’ve grown up! I love life, I enjoy life, I’ve got a lot more freedom and I’m a lot happier.
Adrian was introduced to CLO in 2016 through the Exceptional Needs Unit and found supported accommodation to give him the opportunity to find himself and rebuild his life, Adrian had experienced long term addiction and spent the previous 30 years living between institutions, being homeless and sleeping on the streets. He set some short and long term goals with intent for independent living.
Adrian moved into his accommodation and engaged in activities within the community, this helped Adrian to keep busy and also learnt new skills. He was able to learn gardening and cooking skills which enabled him to feel more independent, leading to his long term goal.
Adrian has now reached three years sobriety and practices his 12 steps and meditation daily to maintain this. In early 2019, he has been released from the Public Trustee and now manages his finances independently.
Adrian has become the treasurer at AA meetings and is sponsoring a new member to assist with their sobriety, Adrian takes great pride in this and enjoys helping his fellow community members. He is now closer to achieving his goal of becoming a peer support worker in the drug and alcohol field.
With supports, Adrian has been able to become independent in the community and maintain his sobriety, he has shown great strength and resilience to achieve what he has today. Adrian has stated that he is starting to feel like he is living a much more active, productive, rewarding and overall better way of life.
